Kent Test and Headteacher Assessment for Entry in September 2022: Further Analysis

Individual Schools with High Numbers of Selective Pupils
Understandably, many parents are interested in identifying the primary schools which have the greatest success rates in the Kent selection process, and I have been regularly asked about these. Any list is fraught with difficulty as children’s success rates will depend more on the number of pupils with the requisite abilities which will vary year on year,   the prosperity of the location, and often on private tutoring arrangements, than in-school support. Indeed KCC rules make quite clear that schools may not teach to support Kent Test performance, a rule which is broadly enforced in state schools, although many use devices to get around this. In spite of claims to the contrary, there is no regulation of private schools in this matter, some of whom exist primarily for the purpose of helping children get to grammar school.

KCC regulations covering data released through Freedom of Information requests place considerable restrictions on what is available where small numbers are involved. As a result the following lists, whilst accurate as far as they go, may have omitted a few high performing schools. The variations from the 2020 pattern are quite remarkable for many Districts, confirming the flaws in looking for the highest performing schools. I am happy to receive additional data. Given all these caveats:

Ashford: Chilham St Mary’s CofE 44%; St Theresa’s Catholic 40%; Lady Joanna Thornhill 40%; Great Chart 35%. Notes: Sharp fall in high pass rates, no schools on 2020 list.

Canterbury: Wickhambreaux CofE 55% (and in 2020 list); Bridge & Patrixbourne CofE 51%; St Mary’s Catholic 48%; St Stephen’s Junior 45%. Note: Sharp fall in high pass rates.

Maidstone: Allington 48%; Yalding Sts Peter and Paul 40% (and in 2020); Oaks 39%; Brunswick House 37% (and in 2020).

Tunbridge Wells:  Claremont 52% (and in 2020); Langton Green 47% (and in 2020); St James CofE 40%; Benenden CofE 33%. Note: sharp fall in high success rates.

Local Tests
I don’t collect full data for the outcomes of 2021 Local Tests for grammar school admission at the six schools which hold them, Dover Boys, Dover Girls, Folkestone Girls, Harvey, Highsted for girls in Sittingbourne and Mayfield for girls in Gravesend. However, the table below shows the number of pupils offered grammar school places as a result of the 2020 Tests.
In 2021, another 377 children were offered Kent grammar school places through success in a local Test only, mainly in Dover and Shepway. Both of the Dover grammar schools offered more than two thirds of their places to children who qualified by the local Test only. Is this providing more opportunities in areas of social deprivation, or damaging local non-selective schools, or both?
