Medway Review 2011 Entry

Number of Reviews Number of successful reviews % of cohort
Medway 249 56 2
Kent 21 6
The 2% pass rate from the whole cohort of Medway children is the level specified in the Medway school transfer scheme.
There were no Review requests from outside Kent or Medway. Medway Council has changed its reporting back detail on Reviews so that its a simple pass/fail decision, accompanied by the written comment on each of English, maths and science. In previous years there was an overall grade of 1-5, but this has now gone.

Medway 11 plus data 2011 entry

The following statistics suggest the reason for the lower score for successful candidates in the Medway test this year:

Children in Cohort Candidates Successes % Success % of cohort
Medway 2905 1587 668 42 23
Kent
354 230 65
Out County
15 10 67

This shows that once again, exactly 23% of the Medway cohort passed the test, the proportion defining the pass mark, with 42% of those taking the test achieving a pass mark, almost exactly the same as last year (41%). The number of Kent children taking the test was up by 41, although the number who passed was up by just 8. The small number of out county candidates was very similar to last year.

The proportion of Medway children who took the test fell by two percent, which was probably the most significant factor in seeing the pass mark fall to 508 from 521, because of the arcane way the score is determined.  Rolls in Medway Year Six children continue to fall, explaining why the number of candidates and successful candidates has declined significantly. This means that pressures on places at individual Medway Grammar schools (and indeed many other Medway schools) should ease further.

Notes:

(1) Appeals for Community and VC Schools are organised by Medway Council. Appeals for Foundation & VA Schools, and Academies, are organised by independent appeal administrators

(2) These figures do not necessarily indicate succss rates in the future, as appeals are judged on the strength of individual cases, not by quotas, and the membership of each Panel varies year on year.

Medway Primary School Appeals 2010 entry

Of the 62 Reception Appeals heard, 15 were upheld, all at two schools, with special circumstances due to other schools nearby closing. The zero succss rate at the other 12 schools underlines the difficulty of winning a reception appeal because of Infant class legislation.

Medway Secondary School Application figures September 2010 entry.

The removal of over 200 secondary school places in Medway to cater for falling rolls has really had an effect this year on the more popular schools as the number of children failing to get their first preferences has increased by 20%. Most popular school is Sir Thomas Aveling, as it has been for several years, with 86 first choices turned away, up from 40 in 2009. The Brompton Academy has leapt into second place turning away 50 first choices, forcing Rochester Grammar into third place being 48 oversubscribed (25 offers going to Kent children!). Fort Pitt Grammar School, after reducing its intake by 30, has now turned away 27 first choices - appeals there look interesting! What we are seeing here is an example of what can happen when school places are removed because of falling rolls - children end up being forced into less popular schools.

Medway Test information for 2010 entry

The total number of Year Six Medway children was 3149  (Interestingly, in spite of publicity about falling rolls in Medway, this is 140 more than last year).

Candidates Successes % Success % of cohort
Medway 1759 727 41 23
Kent 314 222 71
Out County 16 12 75
With a further 4 Kent children passing on Review, this gives a total of 222 Kent children being found selective in Medway, 33 up on last year. The higher pass rate for Kent children merely reflects the higher ability of those likely to submit to an additonal set of tests.
The outside Kent and Medway figures are almost identical to last year. It is likely that most of this group just took the tests for practice with no intention of taking up a Medway Grammar school place. None of these Kent or out of county figures are used to determine the pass score which, as can be seen is fixed to allow 23% of Medway children.
Following the test results, parents of children who have not passed are invited to submit them for a review, which is designed to admit an additional 2% of Medway children. Review numbers for the Medway tests are as follows:

Candidates Successes % Success % of cohort
Medway 270 63 23 2
Kent 26 4 15
Total 296 67 23

There were no candidates for review outside Medway and Kent.

2009 Medway Secondary School Entry

Unfortunately, my request for statistics did not cover the full information I have for Kent. However:

Thomas Aveling is the most oversubscribed school in Medway, 40 first choices turned away. Next in order were The Rochester Grammar School (26), Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School (21), New Brompton College (20), Greenacre School (17), Robert Napier and The Strood Academy (14) and Chatham South (13).

Medway Tests 2008 for 2009 Entry

The number of children in Year Six in Medway Schools in 2008/9 was 3009. Of these, 1732 took the Medway tests, 685 being successful before the Review process. This is 23% of the cohort as expected under the procedures. A further 65 Medway children were successful in Review making a total of 25% of the cohort.

Another 306 Kent children took the Medway tests, 189 being successful (including those at Review). From outside Kent or Medway, just 15 children took the Medway tests, 9 being successful. It is likely that most of this last group just took the tests for practice with no intention of taking up a Medway Grammar school place. None of these out of county figures are used to determine the pass score.

Medway School Appeals 2007-8

Medway Council is only responsible for the appeals at three grammar schools. At Chatham Boys Grammar there were 3 successful appeals out of 13, at Fort Pitt, 8 successful appeals out of 20. At the Maths School, the outcomes were more complicated (see appeals page). 17 appeals out of 32 were successful, but these were all oversubscription appeals for boys who had already passed the Medway test. Another 9 boys were offered places after complaints by me to the ombudsman about the appeal process.

There were four oversubscribed non selective schools under Medway Council control. At Chatham South all 24 appeals were successful,, and at Greenacres all 8 appeals were successful. At Rainham Girls 8 out of 16 appeals were successful and at Walderslade Girls school the one appeal was successful.

All other secondary schools are Foundation Schools and have responsibility for their own appeals.

There were 51 infant school appeals. Of these 11 were successful, but just 3 of the successful appeals happened where there were classes of 30 and therefore subject to Infant Class Legislation.
