Supporting Families
  • I thought I'd keep you updated, as Amy had her taster day last Thursday at grammar school. She felt completely at home and throughly enjoyed her day. She is one happy bunny. Any reservation of her being the only one from her school were completed dispelled when her form teacher gave her a huge hug. I'm so pleased I persisted with the appeal and contacted you. I really couldn't have done it without you or your knowledge of the system. Thank you again

August: Academy and Free School News; and Mayfield Grammar School

New Kent academies open for August 2011 in Kent include Wilmington Grammar School for Girls in a chain with Wilmington Grammar School for Boys. This is allowable because Wilmington Girls was awarded Good with Outstanding Features in its most recent OFSTED Report, enabling Wilmington Boys to be accepted under its wing, as its OFSTED Report was just Satisfactory. This type of linkage emphasises the importance of a good OFSTED Report, sometimes at the expense of other essential aspects of a good eduction (no suggestion of this at Wilmington Girls). The other conversions are:......

Gravesend Grammar School, Hillview School, Tonbridge; and The Abbey School, Faversham (once again this emphasises the importance of OFSTED, as under a previous management this school was in "Serious Weaknesses" and has since made strong progress to become "Good with Outstanding Features"). There are no new primary academies  converting. New Kent applications are: Borden Grammar School (Sittingbourne); Cranbrook School;  along with Graveney Primary School (Faversham); Salmestone Primary School, Margate (in a chain with Garlinge Primary School and Hartsdown Technology College); and Wentworth Primary School, Dartford. You will find the full list here. There are no new primary or secondary academies in Medway and no new applications.

Neither of the Kent Free School proposals has progressed to any form of recognition, and I am not aware of any new proposals.

On a slightly different tack, Gravesend Grammar School for Girls, in progress to become an academy, has changed its name to Mayfield Grammar School, named after the original building in which the school was housed. This is because of its booming popularity with boys in the sixth form, 46 having signed up for September. More and more single sex Kent grammar schools are going co-ed in the sixth form, several of the girls' grammars having dropped the "for Girls" off their titles but this is the first to make a complete change of name.
