Secondary School League Tables Show Highs and Lows for Kent and Medway

Once again Kent school pupils reach above average standards in GCSE results with 5 GSCE A-Cs including English and maths, at 59% (national 58%), having kept above national averages  consistently for many years. Meanwhile, Kent Primary performance consistently lags below the national standard. Medway's performance has declined in relation to national averages for the third consecutive year, down to 56% for 2011.

What is remarkable about the results for individual schools mentioned below is the highs and lows of church sponsored schools and academies.

Naturally, grammar schools dominate the league tables with many scoring 100%, but many non-selective schools have done very well, top being ........

the CofE Bennett Memorial at 86%.  followed by the Catholic St Gregory's at 70%, both in Tunbridge Wells. However, the big success story is Wrotham School which has no complex oversubscription rules, simply takes children living nearest the school, and has no grand buildings, yet has become the third highest non-selective in Kent with 67%. Next are: St Simon Stock Catholic School in Maidstone at 65%; Hillview School, Tonbridge - 64%; the Archbishop's CofE, Canterbury - 59%; and St George's CofE, Broadstairs - 58%. Highest non-selectives in Medway are the two Rainham Schools: Howard (Boys) at 57%; and Rainham School for Girls at 55%.

The troubles of Bishop of Rochester Academy (sponsored by he CofE) continue, clocking up the third worst results in the country for a state school, at 16%. Marlowe Academy in Ramsgate, currently inadequate according to OFSTED, is not much better being 6th worst at 20%.  Robert Napier in Medway comes in 16th worst in the country; Dover Christ Church Academy (sponsored by the CofE) 25th from the bottom at 28%; King Ethelbert School, Westgate 26th; Angley School Cranbrook 35th; and New Line Learning Academy 39th with 30% 5 GCSEs.

In Kent 6 of the lowest twelve performing schools are old style, or sponsored, academies. In Medway they are 2 of the 3 worst performing schools.
