Grammar Schools get funds intended for inner city schools in areas of deprivation.

Written by  Peter Read

Following an FOI enquiry of mine, Kent on Sunday published a critical article on the misuse of funds intended for inner schools in areas of deprivation. The scheme included money paid to successful schools to support those in difficulties, but when the project came to an end in 2006, the schools were allowed to keep the money for their own purposes, a total of £4,566,475 in the current financial year.. Amongst these were five grammar schools.......

that have received the funding ever since on an annual basis. For 2011-12 the sums are as follows: Folkestone School for Girls, £153,213; Invicta Grammar School £94,353; Highworth Grammar School for Girls £106,722; The Harvey Grammar School £138,472; and The Norton Knatchbull School, £91,254. As government tries to manage its economic difficulties and cuts are made in essential education services, surely such random funding should have been removed. Needless to say, this is just the proportion of funds allocated to Kent schools, but as the scheme was a national one one suspects the total runs into hundreds of millions of pounds nationally for the past five years.
